Grace and Tom had what appeared to be an idyllic marriage, unmarred by the usual tribulations that afflict many relationships. At 34, Grace was frequently in awe of how seamlessly perfect her life with Tom seemed. She was well aware that many marriages go through rough patches, but she and Tom appeared to be an exception to the norm.
They had celebrated seven and a half years of marriage, blessed with two wonderful children, and Tom, at 41, was still every bit the man she had fallen in love with years ago. Each morning, he would lovingly bring her coffee in bed, and many evenings he surprised her with flowers or chocolatesโsmall, thoughtful gestures that kept their love vibrant.
However, their tranquil life took an unexpected turn six months ago when they moved into a new house in a serene neighborhood. The move was primarily for the sake of their children, as the new home was ideally situated near a reputed school and seemed like the perfect environment to raise a family.
โThe kids might need some time to adjust to the quietness here,โ Tom had remarked as they settled in, a stark contrast to the bustling city life they were accustomed to.
โTheyโll be fine,โ Grace had reassured him, confident in their resilience. โOnce they get into their new routine, I donโt think theyโll even notice the difference.โ
Grace was also secretly thrilled about the move. The new setting offered her a fresh start, a new environment where she could pursue her passion for writing in the quiet of her new study.
But there was one unsettling aspect of their new surroundingsโtheir neighbor, Stephanie, an elderly woman who lived alone in the house next door. Stephanie was a peculiar figure; she seldom engaged in conversation and often stood outside her home, staring oddly at their house.
โMaybe sheโs just one of those old ladies whoโs been alone so long that sheโs lost in her own world,โ Tom had speculated one evening as they sipped wine on their porch.
โBut that doesnโt make sense,โ Grace had countered. โShe always has visitors. I see them coming and going at all hours. They seem to leave her house in various statesโsome upset, others seemingly elated or deep in thought.โ
Despite the curious nature of their neighbor, life continued blissfully for the family. That was until one shocking morning when Grace discovered Tom frantically packing his belongings.
โTom, whatโs going on?โ she asked, her voice trembling with confusion and fear.
โGrace,โ he said quietly, avoiding eye contact. โI just have to go. Iโm sorry. Iโll still take care of the kids and help out where I can, but I canโt be here anymore.โ
Frozen, Grace tried to process his words. โWhat do you mean you have to go? Whatโs happened? Tom, please talk to me. What changed?โ
But Tom merely repeated, โItโs the right thing to do, Grace. Itโs just right.โ
โLeaving your family isnโt the right thing,โ Grace protested, her heart pounding with anxiety and disbelief.
Tom paused, his eyes searching hers briefly as if he wanted to say more, then he turned away, resolute. Grace watched in horror as he loaded his suitcase into the car and drove off, leaving her grappling with a myriad of unanswered questions.
Later that day, her daughter Hannah approached her with a puzzled look. โMom, is Dad leaving because of what the neighbor told him yesterday?โ
Grace felt a cold wave of realization wash over her. โWhat do you mean, honey? When did Dad go to see her?โ
โYesterday afternoon, when you were picking up Caleb from sports practice,โ Hannah replied. โI was on the porch talking to Maria on the phone, and I saw him go over there. He was there for quite a while.โ
Determined to get to the bottom of this bewildering situation, Grace marched over to Stephanieโs house and knocked on her door. The elderly woman opened it slowly, her expression one of calm.
โStephanie, what did you say to my husband?โ Grace demanded, trying to keep her composure.
Stephanie looked at her with an eerie serenity. โI simply told him the truth, my dear. Heโs not happy with his family. Thatโs going to affect his business. So, he needs to find his happiness elsewhere.โ
Grace felt her blood boil at the audacity of the statement. โWhat? You have no right to interfere in our lives like that! You donโt even know us!โ
Stephanie sighed, a gesture of condescension. โIโm a fortune teller, my dear. I see things as they are and as they should be. Your husband was meant to find his happiness with someone else.โ
Infuriated and in disbelief, Grace stormed out of Stephanieโs house. How could Tom take the words of this strange woman so seriously?
Later, desperate for answers, Grace tracked Tomโs location on her phone to a nearby gas station. She drove there, her mind racing with anger and hurt. Upon arrival, she found Tom inside the convenience store, flirting shamelessly with the young cashier.
โWho is this man?โ Grace muttered to herself as she approached them, her voice shaking with a mixture of anger and heartbreak.
โTom, what is going on?โ she demanded.
He turned to her, guilt flashing in his eyes before he masked it with a look of determination. โThis is my destiny, Grace. Stephanie told me Iโm meant to be with this woman,โ he declared.
The cashier, taken aback, exclaimed, โWait, what? Stephanie? The fortune teller?โ
โYes,โ Tom said, turning to the cashier with excitement. โYou know her?โ
