A devastating incident in California has left a family grieving after a two-day-old baby boy died following what was meant to be a routine circumcision at a private clinic.
According to authorities, the procedure, carried out by Hong-An Jan, may have involved a critical error in medication. Instead of the standard local anesthetic, the newborn was allegedly given a powerful narcotic—raising serious safety concerns.
Soon after the procedure, the baby began showing troubling symptoms, including extreme weakness, lack of responsiveness, and difficulty feeding. Alarmed, his parents returned to the clinic seeking help. However, according to court filings, their concerns were dismissed, with assurances that such reactions were normal.
A lawsuit filed against both the doctor and South Coast Global Medical Center claims that no diagnostic tests were performed, despite signs that could indicate drug-related complications. As the infant’s condition worsened, his parents continued to seek assistance but were reportedly reassured there was no immediate danger.
Tragically, within a day, the baby—identified in legal documents as Charles—stopped breathing. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but despite emergency efforts, he could not be saved.
An autopsy later determined the cause of death to be bronchopneumonia linked to drug intoxication. Investigators described the case as potentially preventable, noting that timely intervention might have changed the outcome.
Authorities have since charged Dr. Jan with involuntary manslaughter. He has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty as both criminal and civil proceedings move forward. Meanwhile, his medical license has been suspended pending further investigation.
