Bette Reynolds, a 76-year-old grandmother originally from Scotland, astonished judges and the audience on The Voice UK with her rendition of Rapper’s Delight. By doing so, she became the oldest contestant in the show’s history.
Born in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Bette now resides in Ontario, Canada. When she stepped on stage, no one anticipated that a grandmother would choose a rap song, especially a classic hit by The Sugarhill Gang. Yet, her flawless delivery of the fast-paced lyrics quickly won over the crowd, filling the room with energy as the audience cheered and clapped. Judges were shown smiling, clearly enjoying the unexpected performance.
Two judges, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones from McFly, were so impressed that they turned their chairs, allowing Bette to continue in the competition as part of Team Tom and Dan.
When asked why she selected such an unusual song, Bette explained, “My grandchildren are into rap, and I thought I’d give it a shot. They picked out some rappers they liked to see how I would handle it.”
Bette’s journey to The Voice stage is just as inspiring as her performance. Though classically trained as a singer at the age of five, she hadn’t performed since 1966. Life took a different path as she got married, started a family, and focused on being a wife and mother.
More recently, Bette cared for her husband, Stewart, who had dementia. After he passed away in January, only a few months before her audition, Bette decided to honor his memory by returning to music. In February, she auditioned for The Voice UK as a way to embrace a new chapter in her life.
Reflecting on her experience, Bette shared, “It’s been a tough year. I cared for my husband for a long time, and we lost him recently. But he was such a joyful person, and I knew we had to keep going. It’s just incredible—truly a blessing.”
The judges were thrilled with Bette’s lively spirit. LeAnn Rimes praised the way the crowd responded to her, and Sir Tom Jones remarked on how youthful her voice sounded, saying he thought it belonged to a much younger person.
Will.i.am was so moved by her performance that he ran onstage to hug Bette, later joining her for a spontaneous duet of I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas, which electrified the audience even more.
